This house in Cowes started life as an average chalet bungalow. By taking off the roof and extending upwards with a big glass gable the owners were able to enjoy splendid Solent views. The end result can be seen below. Another coastal property, the bungalow (below) enjoyed sea views but not from the existing kitchen. I was asked by Gurnard Church to make their entrance more welcoming and solve the problem of providing a disabled WC with level access and an office for the vicar. I look forward to taking this project further when funds are available. Donations to the parish will be gratefully received! A terraced cottage in Cowes where the clients were bursting at the seams, wanted open-plan contemporary living but didn't want to move! We in-filled the wasted space alongside the rear extension, opened up the interior and inserted a bathroom upstairs and a loo under the stairs. The contractor was WH Brading of Cowes who did an excellent job on a tight budget. A new house of contemporary design in Cowes on an extremely narrow site. I designed the internal plan on split levels to make best use of the fall to the rear which is South facing and fully glazed to act as a passive solar collector. The front of the house is faced in red brick to match adjoining properties with the flanks clad in Hardiplank evoking the old sheds and sail lofts in Cowes. The stair rises to the flat roof enjoying panoramic views over the town. Here's a design for a bit of back land infill - A very modest little bungalow, inward looking so as not to overlook the neighbours with an open-plan layout for contemporary living - maybe you have a suitable site? For those with deeper pockets here's one I'd really like to build! Ideally on a steep South facing slope with sea views - several locations around the island come to mind. Please contact me immediately if you have such a site! - grand piano optional. Gurnard Primary Centenary Playground I was asked by the school to help them design and build their new playground. The children helped formulate the brief and came up with lots of exciting ideas which we incorporated in the design. The school wanted to do something special to mark 100 years of education in Gurnard, the head teacher favoured a new library but was out-voted by the children! The children said that special places are difficult to get to so the play area is accessed only by a bridge or through a tunnel or up some steps and through an arch – a bit like ‘The Secret Garden’. The equipment was planned and chosen to encourage balance and co-ordination and is laid out to form a circuit around the space. There are also activity panels to engage the brain. The focal point is a gazebo shelter donated by the local Lions Club – The Lions Den – where a teacher can sit comfortably and keep an eye on the children at the same time. The play area is located in part of the school orchard and there is a long tradition of gardening at the school. 10 replacement fruit trees have been planted with the aim of planting more trees and perimeter hedging in the future. The equipment was funded by charity events organised by the school and supplied by Hand Made Places of West Sussex. The local contractor Island Wide Grounds Maintenance prepared the site and installed the equipment.
